Faerie Magical Crafts
Hi! Welcome to my ocarina
workshop!
There are many methods of making the ocarina, but this is the method that
works the best for me! This is a great project for students learning the clay
medium.
Here is a list of things that you will need to get this project started:
Clay, newspaper, hardwood thickness strip 1/4", rolling pin, bowl of water, sponge, slip, plastic wrap,
Styrofoam balls, needle tool, cardboard circle template, paintbrush, finishing rubber, nail file, drill bits,
fettling knife

Step 1 - Set down newspaper, align your hardwood strips, knead
clay to ensure you get all air bubbles out of the clay. Using your
rolling pin roll out the clay to an even thickness.
Step 2 - With your needle tool  cut around the circumference
of your cardboard circle template.
Step 3 - Carefully lift clay from around the clay circles and
store in a damp cloth preferably in a plastic bag for later.
Step 4 - Put a piece of plastic paper on top of each
Styrofoam ball. Carefully lift a clay circle and mold it
evenly on the ball. If you have a stamp you can now
stamp a design on the center of the circle for decoration.
Allow clay an hour to stiffen to the shape of the mold.
Step 5 - Carefully lift the molded form from the ball. Using a
finishing tool, work grooves from outside to inside along the
outside edge.
Step 6 - With a paintbrush, brush a generous amount
of slip inside the grooved edges.
Step 7 -  To form the body of the ocarina align the top and
the bottom of the molded forms and gently squeeze the
edges together to seal.
Step 8 - Smooth the outside edges of the
ocarina body with a wet finish rubber. First the
back side of the ocarina body then the front
side being careful not to disturb your stamped
design.
Step 9 - To finish the cleaning process take a damp
sponge to the outside edges of the body of the
ocarina, first the back side......then the front, then let it
set, until it leaves no marks when it is touched.
This is what your finished body should look like!
Step 10 - While the body of the ocarina is set aside,
roll a thin even coil used to hang the ocarina. Cut off
ends of the coil in an angle with a fettling tool.
Step 11 - Center, shape and attach
coil to the top of  the body of the
ocarina.
Step 12 - To form the mouth piece roll a thick short
coil.
